About / History:
The Madison Asian Union was established in 1970 as part of the National Asian American Movement in
response to the Vietnam War, the Black Power Moevement, and an increasing awareness of racism against
Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Later in the 1970s, as Madison's Asian American
Population grew, the name changed to what it is known as today, the Asian American Student Union.
Now in its twenty-eighth year, the Asian American Student Union addresses the needs of the Asian
American students in Madison through support and guidance. AASU is involved in the
perpetuation of Asian
American identity and interest through cultural, social, and political events.
